In the case of a stepping motor, the gap (clearance) between stator and rotor can greatly affect performance. In order to improve efficiency, the gap must be narrowed as accurately as possible.
For attaining the above, it is a general practice to make the inside diameter of stator smaller than the design dimension and then grind it back to accurately obtain the desired gap. Since the preliminary stator dimensions overlap the rotor size, normal production methods make the two from separate material blanks.
